International project "Prevention of postural disorders and scoliosis in children from small towns and rural areas" (ILPR.02.02.00-96-032/10)

September 2012 - February 2015

The project was implemented in 2012-2015 in the framework of the cross-border cooperation programme "Lithuania - Poland - Russian Federation 2007-2013".

Partners within the project were pediatric orthopedic sanatorium "Pionersk" of the Ministry of Healthcare of the Russian Federation and Voivodeship Rehabilitation Hospital for Children in the village of Ameryka (Warmian-Mazurian Voivodeship of Poland).

In the course of the project, a comprehensive treatment-and-prevention programme was implemented to prevent postural disorders and scoliosis in school-age children from small towns and rural areas. Complexity of the programme consisted in planning and implementation of two interrelated consecutive modules: diagnostic module and treatment-and-prevention module, which allowed creating sufficient conditions for improving children's health and effective prevention of childhood disability.

As part of the implementation of the diagnostic module of the programme, mass diagnostic examinations of 10111 schoolchildren from the Kaliningrad Region and the Warmian-Mazurian Voivodship have been successfully carried out to identify orthopedic pathologies in the early stages of the disease. During the screening, there was a significant increase in the planned number of children. 1611 children from the Kaliningrad region and in NUTS III area of Warmian-Mazurian Voivodeship were additionally examined due to the great public interest in the project. In addition, 34 municipal educational institutions in the Kaliningrad region and 103 schools in the Warmian-Mazurian Voivodeship expressed willingness to participate in the project.

As part of the implementation of the second (treatment-and-prevention) module of the programme, 586 children with pathology of the spine from the Kaliningrad region underwent a course of inpatient treatment at Sanatorium “Pionersk”, and 575 children from the Warmian-Mazurian Voivodeship – at Ameryka hospital. (a total of 1161 people). The results of the treatment correspond to the planned ones: 1,045 children demonstrated an improvement in objective medical indicators, which corresponds to 90% of the total number of those treated.

Specialists of the Regional Economic Development Agency provided comprehensive support for this project - they participated in the development of the application package, preparation of narrative and financial reports, and implementation of project activities.
